Shipley College 4-0 Boston Spa
A chilly afternoon down at Saltaire Sports Club saw the highly rated (by them) Boston Spa travel down to Shipley for an afternoon which will give them sleepless nights in the days & weeks to come.
The visitors’ late arrival meant the game got away 10 minutes later than scheduled & Shipley came firing out of the blocks against the highly fancied opposition with early chances following some lovely work down the wing from Matty Schofield who as a Bradford City fan would have loved to put one over a team effectively paid for by Leeds United.
A corner by Schofield saw some Southampton style defending before left back Shabul Ali dragged out some unbelievable tekkers with a fantastic overhead volley which flew over the little porker in the Boston goal into the back of the next via the woodwork to break the deadlock & spark scenes of joy.
The Boston defence couldn’t handle the attack & Shipley goalkeeper Jason Greenwood might as well have got a deck chair, a glass of wine & a copy of fifty shades of grey in a first half in which he had nothing to do.
Back up the pitch, the Shipley captain Simon Gelder lead by example getting the ball & striking with power & placement from distance leaving the Boston keeper with no chance once again & doubling Shipley’s advantage.
Just when the Boston Spa managers face couldn’t get any redder, he went from tomato to a Britain’s Got Talent judge’s shiny button as some more fantastic wing play from Matty Schofield saw left back Shebul Ali played through once again to leave him on a hat trick & send Shipley into the half time break with a 3-0 lead.
The visitors who weren’t just inept but completely woeful in the first half came out a stronger unit in the second half, mainly with the tactical decision to go five at the back. However, this tactical decision proved bad as some more lovely play down the flanks saw the ball played to the feet of striker James Atkinson who made up for a poor first half showing by tucking home past the keeper for a fourth & to kill the game off.
Boston’s poor afternoon got much worse after luckily escaping a very strong penalty appeal which the referee was very poor not to award then brought down Matty Schofield in the box with Shipley this time getting the penalty. Matty clearly wanted to take the kick but instead had to give up the opportunity to eventual taker & Captain Simon Gelder who smashed the ball against the bar leaving the goal shaking.
Boston who at this point must of thought that nothing else could have gone wrong was proved wrong when one of the midfield had a tap in for a consolation & instead was in need of a Taxi after shamefully smashing the ball so far over that Felix Baumgartner would have probably caught it on his way down from his Space Sky jump the week previous.
It would be unfair to not mention some of the efforts of the lads who didn’t get on the score sheet though. The centre backs put in a fantastic shift at centre back to keep a highly rated strike force virtually nonexistent throughout. Glenn Clements after a quite first half turned it on in his second half cameo in similar fashion to teammate James Atkinson & of course Rooney who came off the bench to looks of somewhat pain by his teammates played some nice touches & made some good runs to leave the defence wondering what sort of unknown quantity he truly was.
All in all, not one player let the side down on the day.
Fortunately for Boston minutes the later the full time whistle was blown & back to back victories for Shipley were secured in convincing style against a side who came to Salts expecting an easy victory, well I’d expect nothing less from a side gracing the badge of Leeds United, choking in style after the choice to big themselves up in such a way.
Shipley College Line Up: Greenwood, Islam, Lewis, Mahmood, Ali, Clements, Shahid, Gelder (c), Schofield, Atkinson, Shajad
Subs (All Used): Richardson, Leach, Hameed, Rooney
