Huddersfield Town 2-2 Bradford City (City Win 4-3 on Penalties)
Johnstone's Pain Trophy Northern Section Second Round
Tuesday 4th October 2011 - Galpharm Stadium - Attendance: 10,489 (2498 Visitors)
I called a penalty victory from the moment the draw was made! And it came true.
After being caught up in the rush hour, mill fire & M62 car crash scenario, we missed kick off & first two-three minute of the game, but that's not important.
After a not so much to talk about first half in which Ross Hannah went off injured with a seriously swollen knee to be replaced by soon to be hero Nialle Rodney & fellow soon to be hero Matt Duke booked for unsporting behaviour, Lee Novak provided the only moment of talking point when his goal was disallowed in the 3rd minute of injury time for being offside.
Half time was equally as less talkable as my matchday experience was nearly ruined by a group of lads who have the combined mental age & IQ of my one year old Brother, but we'll leave it as Cunliffe's 'f'rape left people wondering his choice of footwear. So, to a very exciting second half.
After some early Dogbotherer's pressure City found a breakthrough. As Chris Mitchell lined the free kick up, I turned to Carribob & Leahy to announce that "this is 1-0 City." To which they laughed, but were soon shut up & sent into hysteria as half time sub Antony Kay turned into his own net with a bullet header that the best of strikers would be proud off to break the deadlock & make my prediction of a lead for the Bantams a reality.
Huddersfield turned the pressure back round & won a corner. Ahead of this corner being taken, I turned to Carribob & Leahy once again to announce that TB's would draw level, the ball came in & Branston bundled ex-City youngster Danny Ward over. Tommy Miller, who turned City down for DB's over the summer stepped up & calmly rolled the ball into the back of the next to draw them level & keep my night of predictions on the road.
This level scoreline however only lasted for 107 seconds as City won a corner. I predicted once again that City would re-take the lead, which then saw a in swinging corner from Chris Mitchell headed into the back of net by the 6"7 centre back that is Luke Oliver to make it 2-1 & heap more pressure onto favourites Town, which eventually turned out to be their downfall.
That only happened after they drew level again in the 70th minute. Some poor defensive marking work from City allowed corner after corner for the home side. Ex-City youngster Ward then popped up with a peach of a corner which allowed Town captain Peter Clarke to volley home & make it 2-2 & game on at the Gayfarm once again!
City then spent the rest of the game on the defensive as Dogbotherer's had attack after attack after attack in which City time & time again, defended & defended & defended to hold out to take the game to a penalty shootout.
The Shootout began:
Huddersfield took the lead as Lee Novak fired past Duke.
It stayed 1-0 as Flynn blasted his penalty wide & over Colgan's crossbar.
Huddersfield stayed at 1-0 as Tommy Miller couldn't repeat his earlier actions as Matt Duke saved.
City drew level with a spotkick from Mark Stewart.
Huddersfield retook the lead through a spotkick from Daniel Ward.
City made it 2-2 with a converted Reid penalty.
Antony Kay then kept his good night for City going with blasting his penalty over.
3-2 City as Robbie Threlfall fired City into the lead.
It became 3-3 as Alan Lee tucked his kick away.
City then won as Nialle Rodney blasted his kick into the top corner to wrap up a very passionate derby victory for the Bantams!
So, derby day glory for City as they conquered the Dog Bothering Town Bastards at the Gayfarm!
However, a shout out to Accrington loanee defender Tom Bender who ended up in hospital with a suspected broken neck versus Tranmere this evening. However, he's fine as it is just severe concussion!
