Bradford City 0-0 Sheffield Wednesday (City win 3-1 on Penalties)
Johnstone's Paint Trophy Northern Section First Round
Tuesday 30th August - The Coral Stadium - Attendance: 3519 (729 Visitors)
So, Oscar Jansson was our hero at VP in front of the sky cameras! A penalty shootout victory over our League One Yorkshire rivals kept Cooper's undefeated record as caretaker manager intact as he handed the reigns to Phil Parkinson!
So, after meeting the new manager & meeting Wednesday off the coach (getting on Sky on both occasions in the process!) I meet Ben, Tom & company before heading into Valley Parade for the game & attempted to get the moaners of the Co-op rocking for the game! We failed in style, which caused a few arguments with a steward! We want TL or Kop in future please!
So, as the teams entered VP to a funeral amount of noise (Co-op is disgraceful!) The game got underway... Cue the first of the two controversial moments.... Megsongate!
Johnstones Paint Trophy rules & regulations indicate that you MUST have six recognised first team players in your squad & he did until 90 seconds into the game when O' Donnell came on for Weaver & then it went down to three with the final two subs after 17 minutes which meant 73 minutes & penalties had to be survived by the same eleven! He said he only started the three who came off because 'he had to!' As far as I'm concerned, Megson disrespected the JPT, Bradford City & the 729 paying Sheffield Wednesday fans.
So, to the actual first half action! Well, to be honest there was the odd moment to report but not much. Sheffield Wednesday had one or two missed chances & on the City end there was the Hanson header during injury time which went just, just wide. So to controversial moment number two, Drumgate!
Drumgate is an odd one! What is the real reason behind the drum being taken at half time?
We were given these excuses:
Racist Chanting - there was none.
We were given a warning to sit down during the half time interval - We were never given such warning.
Persistent standing - We were told we could by the steward pre-match.
Complaints - They wouldn't confirm this was true after saying it.
So, I was wondering the real reason? Because different stewards saying different things! Also, why did it take three stewards to take one drum of a fourteen year old? We needed atmosphere at the game last night to make up for Sky broadcasting 22,000 empty seats to the rest of the country... Oh Dear!
So, after that a more entertaining second half & were I was sat a more tense & hostile one towards a certain Mark Lawn as well. The bantams started on fire as a dodgy back pass from the young Wednesday centre back sent Jack Compton tearing clear only to be denied by a class save from Richard O' Donnell in Sheff Wed goal! Then, in the 64th minute Luke Oliver headed a Chris Mitchell corner goalbound & it crossed the line to put City 1-0 up, or so we thought. It was cleared by the shakey Wednesday defence & depsite mass protests the game stood at 0-0. Despite chances from either side which included another Oliver header coming off the crossbar in injury time. Penalties it was.
Clinton Morrison blazed his over the bar for Wednesday, before Jones tucked his away for 1-0.
Liam Palmer had his saved by Oscar Jansson, Michael Flynn put City 2-0 in front.
Giles Coke scored before Hannah replied the same way, 3-1 City.
Oscar Jansson then saved from Chris Sedgwick to keep it at 3-1 & send City sailing through.
Player Ratings:
Oscar Jansson - 8 - Did his job in the penalty shootout to be the hero & send City through! Please keep him Parko!
Liam Moore - 7 - Back to his performance against Dagenham, very happy his loan has been extended!
Guy Branston - 8 - Kept Clinton Morrison very very quiet! And did his part when needed! Also the tissue up the nose in first half... Classic!
Luke Oliver - 8 - Hit the crossbar in injury time & had his goal very cruelly not awarded & was rock solid at the back again.
Robbie Threfall - 7- Getting slightly better game by game! Back to his old self is scouse!
Chris Mitchell - 6 - Bit non exsistent after Saturday, but his crossing & set pieces were top notch again!
Michael Flynn - 6 - Good solid midfield showing from the expierenced Flynn. Finding his McCall form again!
Ritchie Jones - 8 - Getting better game by game & looking to be a stand out performer for the Bantams this season!
Jack Compton - 8- At last I can call Jack MOTM! He terrorised the right side of Wednesday & was denied a goal by a class save from Richard O' Donnell. Overall stand out performer & never dropped out of the picture until he was subbed.
Mark Stewart - 7 - Worked hard as ever! & created space for Hanson to run into!
James Hanson - 7 - How, How did he miss in first half injury time!
SUBS:
Ross Hannah - 6 - Came off the bench & took a beautiful penalty to effectively kill the shootout!
Michael Bryan - 6 - Won't be a shame when he goes back to Watford but good luck to the lad!
Luke O' Briem - 5- Didn't really have much time to do anything to change the complex of the game.
To finish of the blog, our new Ten Catergories chosen by Chapalar:
Was it worth the money? To see City beat Wednesday of course!
City MOTM - Many, many candidates! Compton just won it for me! Best game in a City shirt so far!
Wednesday MOTM - Their sub keeper Richard O' Donnell kept them in the game until the shootout!
Quote of the Match - 'How is calling you a paedophile racist?'
Goal of the Match - Luke Oliver's ghost goal would've been it! But I'd have to go with Ross Hannah's penalty in the shootout.
Moment of the Match - Oscar Jansson's winning save from Chris Sedgwick!
Fan of the Match - A toss up between Tango & Chris Wood! Yet both miss out to Laney's rant! It goes to Laney!
Chant of the Match - It's a tie between 'We want our drum back!' & 'Timmy's a paedo!'
FB Status of the Match - got a cut on my lip from headbutting the advertising board after last night, joys of penalties - Jonny Stott
Referee Watch - Tony Bates was dodgy & his linesman's error took the game to penalties!
FATWATCH - Tango in the away end wins it this time!
